THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI  SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE PRESENTS LECTURE AND EXHIBIT “MARION MANLEY: MIAMI’S FIRST WOMAN ARCHITECT

The events are free and open to the public



      WHAT: The University of Miami (UM) School of Architecture will present a lecture and exhibit of images from the book Marion Manley:  Miami's First Woman Architect. Authors Catherine Lynn and Carie Penabad will explore the relationship of Manley’s work to her life and to the broader historical moment of which she was a part, including the overall development of the city of Miami.



      WHEN/WHERE: At the UM School of Architecture Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center, Irvin Korach Gallery and grounds,
 1215 Dickinson Drive, UM Coral Gables Campus.


      WHY:
Marion Manley was Miami’s first woman architect. She had a successful career that spanned six decades. Manley designed in collaboration with Robert Law Weed the buildings currently occupied by the University of Miami School of Architecture--a series of post-war graduate student housing buildings that were renovated to become academic buildings for the school in 1983 by faculty member Jan Hochstim.

     

WHO:

·         Catherine Lynn teaches courses in historic preservation and American architectural history in the UM School of Architecture. She has held curatorial posts at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum and the Atlanta Historical Society and has taught at Yale, Columbia University, and the State University of New York's Fashion Institute of Technology.  She was also director of education and development for the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation.

 

·         Carie Penabad teaches Architectural Design and Drawing in the UM School of Architecture. Her firm CURE & PENABAD Architects has received numerous awards including American Institute of Architects awards, state and local preservation awards, a National Congress for New Urbanism Award, and a Silver Medal prize at the 2010 Miami Biennale. Most recently, the firm was nominated as a finalist for the prestigious Marcus Cooperation Architectural Prize for emerging architectural talent.
